Google has launched a new app, Dreambeans (for iOS and Android), which creates a comic-like story of your life. It collects data from various Google services (Gmail, Calendar, Photos, YouTube, and Search History) and creates "daily stories" illustrated by artificial intelligence. These stories are meant to give you new ideas and recommendations, but gradually, these stories build up to form a story of your life, just like in the Memo app.
For example, Dreambeans can draw you visiting a new coffee shop near your home, or getting a new dog, or taking up yoga. Stories are sorted by topic, and you can then view your life timeline by topic, such as travel or work.
In general, I like this app because it attracts interest to your your own life instead of endlessly scrolling through a feed of other people's reels. This makes your life richer, and you can really find new ideas in these pictures.
But are the automatically-drawn pictures better than real photos? And are AI-generated stories better than ones you can write down manually? All these AI apps ultimately teach us to be lazy and not to think and create, just watch what the AI has prepared for us.
Furthermore, such app raises many privacy questions. Of course, Google swears that all your data from Gmail, Calendar, Photos, and YouTube won't fall into the wrong hands, but can you be 100% sure if AI model processes it? When you keep a story in the Memo app, all your photos and notes are stored only on your computer and are not transmitted to the internet and to AI. You can even protect your data with a password.
